CBC students Jack Palmer (6th year) and Leon Reilly (4th year) have been selected to represent Ireland at the 2020 World Schools' Debating Championships that will take place next July in Mexico City. They will make up part of the five member Team Ireland which also includes students from CBC Cork, Loreto College St Stephen's Green and Terenure College.
Jack and Leon emerged successful from the team selection process that finished yesterday, Sunday October 6th. To qualify for the team, the boys took part in a series of regional trials and the two day national trials this weekend. More than seventy students from across Ireland took part in the trials and this was whittled down to a final twelve for the national trials, from which the team of five was selected. The trial process involved an assessment of their debating achievements, a general knowledge quiz and a large series of debates on the type of topics that they might face at the Championships. Of course, both Jack and Leon have both excelled at debating for CBC over the last few years. Jack is the current Leinster and National Champion at senior level, was the Leinster Champion and National Runner-up at junior level. Leon was the top speaker in Leinster and a National finalist at junior level last year. CBC debating has grown from strength to strength over the last ten years and Leon and Jack are first CBC students to be selected for the national team. Team Ireland will spend the rest of the year training every weekend to prepare for the World Championships. They will research and prepare a vast array of topics, engage in practice debates against former team members and compete against teams from our nearest neighbours. Team Ireland are generously supported through fund raising and by the Department of Education and Science. Sean Drummond left CBC in 2013 and was a beloved pupil during his time here, On the 23rd of March this year Sean's world changed dramatically, when he was in an accident and had a traumatic brain injury. Below is an invitation to a fundraiser which has been set up in his name. Most of those who've met Sean Drummond in any walk of life will know him as a jack of all trades and master of most. Be it rising to the top of the class in academics, winning this year's player of the year with his beloved Cuala Senior Football team or throwing dodgy dance moves every Saturday night, Sean has been at the very core of our friend group for as long as we can remember.
On the 23rd March this year Sean's world changed dramatically, when he was in an accident and had a traumatic brain injury. He has fought through countless surgeries and challenges, and in July he was transferred to the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability in London. Sean has started a programme of rehabilitation. He will need further rehabilitation courses and may need specialist equipment as he tries to recover from his injuries. Sean is someone who rises to the challenge at every occasion and delivers time and time again. This time we're all rallying around him as he takes on his biggest challenge yet, and we need your support to help get him there. On the 21st September we're running a duo of events to celebrate Sean and everything we love about him. The first, is a Tag Rugby event hosted in Cuala GAA, Dalkey. The second, is a night of singing and dancing in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire. Team tickets for the tag event are now available at Student and Adult levels, this admits a team of 10 people. Evening tickets are also available although they're sold on an individual basis. Over the coming weeks we look forward to sharing more details about Sean, the event, acts, prizes, auctions, entertainment and the impact we're going to have on all those close to him. We'd hugely appreciate any support that can be offered in the form of prizes or donations; this can be achieved through contacting the owner of this page, donating to the GoFundMe page below, or at [email protected] https://www.gofundme.com/f/support4drummo |
