Congratulations to current 4th Year students Andy Cullinan and David Dooley on their victory in the final of the 2020 Junior Leinster Debating Championships last Wednesday. The final had been planned to take place last academic year but was postponed due to the closure of school in March after the outbreak of Covid-19. This was second time that Andy and David had represented CBC in the final of this competition, having made the final in second year. On that occasion they lost out to Terenure College. This time they came home with the trophy. They defeated teams from CBS Wexford, Holy Child Killiney and Belvedere College. They were opposing the motion that “This House Believes the Internet has done more harm than good to democracy”. Due to the current lockdown conditions, the final took place on-line, with the boys speaking from a classroom in CBC and the other teams from their own schools while the judges watched on a Zoom call.
Their win is a particularly historic win for CBC as it marks the first time that we have won the team prizes at both Senior and Junior level in the same year, after James O’Donoghue and Leon Reilly won the senior final in late August. The school debaters are coached by the very experienced Mr. G O'Neill. Congratulations to Mr. O'Neill also, for the successes of his debating teams the past school year. From November 16th until November 20th 2020, CBC held their Stand Up Week. Various events and activities were be held throughout the week. Check back for more soon. CBC students Donncha Murphy (6th year) and Leon Reilly (5th year) have been selected to represent Ireland at the 2021 World Schools' Debating Championships that will take place next July. They will make up part of the five member Team Ireland which also includes students from St Aloysius' College Carrigtwohill, Loreto College Beaufort and Terenure College.
Donncha and Leon emerged successfully from the team selection process that finished on Sunday October 19th. To qualify for the team, the boys took part in a series of regional trials and the two day national trials this weekend. More than seventy students from across Ireland took part in the trials and this was whittled down to a final twelve for the national trials, from which the team of five was selected. The trial process involved an assessment of their debating achievements, a general knowledge quiz and a large series of debates on the type of topics that they might face at the Championships. Due to the current covid-19 restrictions, all the debates took place online. Of course, both Donncha and Leon have both excelled at debating for CBC over the last few years. Leon is the current Leinster Champion. They are the current National Mace Champions at senior level, was the Leinster Champion and National Runner-up at junior level. Donncha has also finished runner-up in nearly every major Irish schools debating competition. This is Leon's second year on Team Ireland. He was a member of the team last year when Ireland made it all the way to the semi-finals. Team Ireland will spend the rest of the year training every weekend to prepare for the World Championships. They will research and prepare a vast array of topics, engage in practice debates against former team members and compete against teams from our nearest neighbours. Team Ireland are generously supported through fund raising and by the Department of Education and Skills. Please see attached letter to parents & guardians from the Acting Chief Medical Officer ![]()

CBC Win Leinster Debating Championships!
Congratulations to the CBC team of James O'Donoghue and Leon Reilly who on Saturday last, won the final of the Leinster Senior Debating Championships. The final was due to have been held last March and the Covid-19 outbreak forced its postponement. Due to the government's recently increased restrictions on indoor gatherings, the final had to take place on-line, with all the speakers participating via Zoom. The motion for the final was "This House Believes that Cancel Culture is Effective" and Leon and James were on the opposition side. They were joined in the final by another team from CBC, Conor Coveney and Jack Mulhall, as well as other speakers from Castleknock Community College, Belvedere, Terenure, St Peter's Wexford and Loreto Beaufort. This marks a great end to a summer of debating for Leon who was part of the Irish Schools' Team who made it to the World Semi-finals. We are incredibly proud of all four of our students for qualifying for the final and putting in excellent performances in very difficult circumstances. They really did demonstrate the hard work and flexibility that we need to show in these difficult and uncertain times. |
